Do you ever wonder why your favorite TV shows rarely feature restaurants or stores you recognize? Even if Angelina Jolie’s character would enjoy a caramel frappuccino just as much as you do, you won’t see her at Starbucks because the production has to pay for the right to even be in their parking lot. Starbucks doesn’t just offer the use of its identifiable brand for free.
This leaves producers with a very real problem. If they can’t afford to have their characters use name-brand items, where will they eat? What beer will they drink?
Enter Prop Brand, a new division of Bon’s Eye Marketing that aims to solve this problem. Prop Brand’s purpose is to create fake brands for “reel” productions. Our Prop Brand team creates all the materials a business normally needs (a logo, signage, menus, etc.), but for a fraction of the price Starbucks would charge.
There’s more to Prop Brand than designs. We wanted to use our talents to give back to the community in which we reside. One could say that as a Wilmington-based division, the fate of “Filmington” or “Wilmywood” is dear to the hearts of all of us on the Prop Brand team.
As part of our launch plan, we want to spread the word about the positive impact our film and television industry has on our regional economy. If the state pulls the plug on film incentives, many area productions are sure to relocate. With Prop Brand, we’re raising awareness through the skills we know best: graphic design and market trends.
Prop Brand has designed a number of “icon-ic” t-shirts that feature visuals of productions filmed in North Carolina. With the sales of these shirts, Prop Brand will donate a percentage of the profits to Wilmington Film Commission. The shirts will first be sold online, then potentially in shops around Wilmington and other NC cities.
Prop Brand gives us – a bunch of marketing-minded movie junkies – a chance to help an industry we love. We hope that our talent and passion can make Prop Brand a contributing factor in productions’ decision to come, and stay, in North Carolina.
